I Formation Offense Best & Top 10 Youth Football Formations

The I Formation Offense is a very old formation. Almost as old as it’s grandfather the T Formation. The I was developed in the 1910s and became popular again in the 1950s and 1960s. John McKay at USC was a big I Formation Offense coach. I even have his book on the I. The I is one of the Best and Top Youth Football Formations to install as a youth football coach for your little league tackle football team.

Below is the I Formation diagram in an I Wing alignment. QB is under Center. The FB and the TB are aligned behind the Quarterback about 2 and 5 yards. The Wing can be just outside a Tight End or in a Slot position or Wide Receiver alignment. Other popular I formations are the Power I and the Maryland Stack I. I ran the Power I Option Offense in High School. And in my Power Wing Beast Offense playbook I prefer the Off-set I Formation which I call Angle.

The I Formation Offense is very simple and easy to install. I actually use the I Formation to teach pee wee football players the Offensive holes and numbering system that I use. The I formation is great to run ISO leads to every hole down the line of scrimmage. When you Nasty split the TEs and spread out the Wing it becomes a pretty good Sweep and Passing offense too. Many many HS teams use the I Formation as their base Offensive formation.
