Monday Practice: Resetting the Team After Two Straight Losses

Transitioning from a 3-0 start to a two-game slide is a challenge for any youth football team. Based on the collective wisdom from the Coaches’ Huddle, here is how to structure a Monday practice to regain momentum and lift the team’s spirits.

Rebuilding Team Energy

  • Start with a Mindset Reset: Adopt a “Goldfish” mentality—have a short memory for the losses and treat Monday as the start of a brand-new 0-0 season.
  • Inject Some Fun: Replace the standard warmup with a ten-minute competitive, non-football game to break the tension and get the kids excited to be back on the field.
  • Encourage Ownership: Have a brief, honest talk about the “crossroads” the team is at; when players feel heard and take ownership, they are more likely to buy back in.

Refining the Technical Focus

* Prioritize the Basics: Dedicate significant time to “Every Day Drills” (EDDs) and core blocking and tackling fundamentals to rebuild player confidence.
* Simplify the Game Plan: Rather than adding new plays, focus on achieving flawless execution of your core offensive and defensive schemes.
* Analyze the “Why”: Use insights from film review to identify specific deficiencies, allowing the staff to target the top three areas needing improvement.

Managing the Environment

* Healthy Competition: Increase the intensity of practice by opening up reps, giving everyone a chance to compete and show their growth.
* Filter the Noise: While parents may be “chirping,” stay focused on your coaching style and keep the atmosphere positive and uplifting for the kids.
* Provide Clear Direction: If external feedback becomes a distraction, maintain boundaries by staying professional.
